The fifth annual ?Treads for Threads? clothing drive culminated on January 17, commemorating the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his dream to help those in need. ?Our ?Treads for Threads? event epitomizes Dr. King?s belief that we are all one family, and as a family, we should come together and help one another,? stated Matt Story, Big O Tires. The Denver-metro Big O Tires stores have been collecting warm winter clothing since December 1, 2010. Through the generosity of hundreds of people, Big O Tires collected over 10,000 pounds of clothing to give away through its Treads for Threads event.
According to the National Alliance to End Homelessness, Colorado has over 14,000 residents who are considered homeless. This number is expected to increase by over 1,700 people due to the current economic conditions. One of the most common living situations prior to entering homelessness is living with friends or family (known as doubling-up). Over 75,000 Coloradoans currently live in this situation. Many of these individuals and families do not have enough winter coats, hats, boots, gloves and sweaters to combat the blistering cold Colorado experiences during winter months.
Since its inception in 2005, Big O Tires dealers have collected over 35,000 pounds of clothing for those who are less fortunate. Arc Thrift Stores and Volunteer?s of America hosted the event at the 26th annual ?Dinner for Those who Hunger.?
