ubuntu doesn't start; gray logo screen keeps showing

Hi I'm running ubuntu on VMware player and suddendly it is not working. when I powered up the ubuntu, i get this gray screen with ubuntu logo on it. and nothing progresses. what should I do? Thanks!!
